Guard James Carlton scored 18 points and guard James Daniel had 17 as Howard dominated Goucher 101-54 on Sunday evening in its home opener.

James Miller, another member of the backcourt, had 12 points for the Bison (1-1). Howard took control quickly, led 46-20 at halftime and outrebounded the DIII Gophers 49-32.

Guard Alex Noble and Kevin Miles each scored 10 points in Goucher’s season opener.

Howard lost its first game Friday at Miami (Fla.), falling 84-49. The Bison shot 29 percent from the field and committed 17 turnovers against the ACC program.

No such problems against the Gophers. The Bison shot 51.4 percent from the field, made 11 3-pointers and sank 16 of 19 free throws while committing 10 turnovers.

Goucher shooters clanked throughout, finishing 15 of 56 (26.8 percent). Noble went 1-for-12 from the field.

Daniel, the preseason MEAC Player of the Year, only made 4 of 13 shots from the field, but scored his 17 points in 14 minutes. The 5-foot-11 sophomore hit three 3-pointers, made all six of his free throws, grabbed five rebounds and had four assists. Carlton led the Bison with seven rebounds and had three blocks.

Howard starts the season shorthanded. Junior guard Brandon Ford, a potential starter, is out 3-6 weeks with a Grade 3 ankle sprain. Senior forward Prince Okoroh, the team’s leading rebounder and second-leading scorer last season, will miss the entire 2014-15 campaign with a right foot fracture.

The Bison play at William & Mary on Tuesday.
