Guard Eric Laster made a jumper with one second left in regulation and the Loyola (Md.) Greyhounds snapped a three-game losing streak with a 64-62 victory over the Columbia Lions at Levien Gym in New York, N.Y., on Tuesday.
Forward Franz Rassman led Loyola (3-4) with a career-high 16 points, while guard Andre Walker added 14. Guard Tyler Hubbard scored 12 and forward Nick Gorski finished with 11 off the bench for the Greyhounds, who were 5 of 10 from 3-point range.
Guard Maodo Lo scored 22 points and guard Kyle Castlin had 13 points and 7 rebounds for Columbia (4-2), which had its winning streak end at four games. Loyola was the first team to score more than 50 points against Columbia in the past four contests.
A 3-pointer by Hubbard increased the Loyola’s lead to 49-42 with 11:54 left in the game. Columbia switched to a 2-3 zone and closed the gap. A dunk by Lo pulled the Lions to within 49-48 midway through the second half. However, the Greyhounds retook control and a layup by Rassman gave them a 58-50 margin with just under two minutes left in the game.
A 3-pointer by guard Steve Frankoski and a pair of free throws by Lo pulled Columbia to within 62-59 with 1:17 remaining. After guard Denzel Brito turned the ball over for Loyola, guard Isaac Cohen tied the game with a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left. After a pair of timeouts, Laster just beat the final buzzer with his jumper to provide Loyola with the victory.
