Offering a glimmer of optimism in the 76ers’ lost season, Philadelphia guard Michael Carter-Williams became the first player in franchise history to win three Rookie of the Month awards.
Carter-Williams received the Eastern Conference’s March honor on Tuesday, the NBA announced. He previously won the award in the combined months of October and November, as well as in January.
Last month, the 76ers lost 15 of 16 games, but Carter-Williams continued to shine. His averages of 14.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 6.5 assists marked the first time a rookie topped 14, eight and six, respectively, in a month with a minimum of 10 games played since Grant Hill did so for the Detroit Pistons in April 1995.
By topping 200 points, 100 rebounds and 100 assists in March, Carter-Williams joined Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah and Miami Heat forward LeBron James as the only players (rookie or not) to reach those levels in a month since January 2007.
Carter-Williams pulled down 135 rebounds for the month, the best total by a guard since March 2004, when Bobby Sura grabbed 142 rebounds for the Atlanta Hawks.
On the season, Carter-Williams is averaging 16.5 points, 6.1 rebounds, 6.3 assists and 1.97 steals. All of those figures are tops among the rookie class.
According to the 76ers, the only players to lead all rookies in scoring, rebounding and assists since 1950-51 were the Cincinnati Royals’ Oscar Robertson in 1960-61 and the Phoenix Suns’ Alvan Adams in 1975-76.
When the 76ers snapped their NBA-record-tying, 26-game losing streak on Saturday with a rout of the Pistons, Carter-Williams finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals in 31 minutes.
