Patricio Garino scored a game-high 23 points as the George Washington Colonials took command early and rolled to an 83-60 victory over the visiting Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers on Thursday at the Smith Center in Washington.

The Colonials jumped out to an early 22-9 lead and never trailed. But UMBC (0-7) rallied and cut the lead to 29-23 before George Washington (4-2) scored eight in a row en route to a 46-34 halftime lead.

Freshman guard Malcolm Brent went 4-for-4 on 3-pointers in the first half and scored 12 points to help the Retrievers stay close, but the Colonials pulled away in the second half.

Brent led UMBC with 15 points. The Retrievers hurt themselves with 21 turnovers and watching the Colonials hold a big edge in rebounding (37-29).

UMBC suffered a big loss earlier in the day when it confirmed that guard Rodney Elliott, last year’s top scorer, will undergo shoulder surgery and miss the entire season.

Elliott suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder in the season opener against Akron and hasn’t played since. The team is hoping he’ll get a medical hardship so he can play three more years.

George Washington will next play at Charlotte on Sunday. The Retrievers head to Iowa for a game Saturday afternoon.
