Senior guard R.J. Price scored 14 points, and three of his Radford teammates scored in double figures as the Highlanders defeated Howard 61-52 Thursday at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.

Radford (1-2) fought off Howard (1-3) in the second half to win in its home opener. The Highlanders scored the game’s final five points in the last 1 minute, 34 seconds to lock up the victory.

Radford guard Taj Owens contributed 11 points, and guard Rashun Davis and forward Javonte Green added 10 apiece.

The teams struggled offensively in the first half, and the Highlanders took a 20-18 lead at the break. Both teams played much better in the final 20 minutes, and Howard tied the game twice, the final time at 34-34.

Radford then scored six consecutive points in 51 seconds and never trailed again.

Price made just four of 14 shots from the field on the night, but he went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Davis missed eight of nine shots from the field but made eight of 10 from the line.

Sophomore guard James Miller scored a game-high 19 points for Howard. Freshman guard James Daniel III carried finished with 16 points. They were the only two Bison players who finished in double figures.

Howard will host Hood on Sunday. Radford also plays at home the same day, taking on Catawba.
