Sophomore forward Jameel Warney came off the bench to post 18 points and eight rebounds, leading Stony Brook to a 72-53 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Wednesday at Pritchard Gymnasium in Stony Brook, N.Y.

Warney was one of three players who scored in double figures for Stony Brook (19-8, 11-2 American East Conference), which has won four of its last five games. Sophomore guard Carson Puriefoy scored 12 points and senior guard Dave Coley had 10.

Senior center Brett Roseboro had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead UMBC (9-18, 5-9), which has lost three of four.

UMBC raced out to an 8-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest, but Stony Brook responded with a 14-4 run, taking the lead on a dunk by senior forward Eric McAlister with 10:29 remaining in the period.

The Retrievers went back on top moments later on a layup by freshman forward Malik Garner, but the Seawolves answered with an 8-1 run to regain the lead for the good.

Stony Brook led 35-23 at the break and extended its advantage to 16 points on a 3-pointer by Coley early in the second half.

UMBC cut the Seawolves’ lead to 11 on a number of occasions later in the half, but the Retrievers couldn’t cut the deficit to single digits. They trailed by 12 after freshman guard Rodney Elliott made a 3-pointer with 11:27 to go, but Stony Brook pulled away with an 11-1 run over the next seven minutes.
