Towson 79, Northeastern 70

Forward Rafriel Guthrie scored a game-high 21 points, and Towson posted a 79-70 win over Northeastern on Thursday in a Colonial Athletic Association game at Matthews Arena in Boston.

Guard Mike Burwell added 19 points for the Tigers (19-9, 10-3 CAA), helping Towson earn its seventh win in eight games. Towson forwards Marcus Damas and Timajh Parker-Rivera added 13 points apiece.

Northeastern (9-19, 6-8) received a team-high 17 points from guard T.J. Williams. Forward Scott Eatherton contributed 15 points and nine rebounds for the Huskies. Guard David White scored 11, and forward Reggie Spencer had 10.

The Huskies led 34-31 at halftime, but Guthrie scored the first five points of the second half on a layup and a 3-pointer, putting Towson on top.

The lead changed hands five times before Northeastern moved in front 60-57 on a Williams three-point play with 6:44 remaining. The Tigers then went on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes, all the points coming from Guthrie and Damas, to grab a 65-60 advantage.

Northeastern responded with a 6-0 surge to move back on top, but Parker-Rivera’s three-point play with 2:35 to go gave the Tigers a 67-66 lead. Towson never trailed again.

The Tigers closed out the win from the foul line, hitting all eight attempts in the final minute, six of them by Burwell.

Towson’s next game is Saturday at Hofstra. Northeastern, which lost for the third time in four games, plays Saturday at William & Mary.
