Mike Myers finished with a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds, and teammate Devon Walker added 21 points as the visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks defeated the Duquesne Dukes 78-69 on Sunday at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh.
Myers had a big second half as UMES held off a Duquesne rally. The forward scored 18 of his points in the final 20 minutes as the Hawks, who led most of the game, remained in command in the final minutes.
Walker, a guard, came up big in the first half — especially from long range. He went 5 for 5 on three-pointers in the first half and helped the Hawks take charge.
UMES made eight of its first nine three-pointers and ended the game 9 for 15. In fact, the Hawks shot well throughout the game, making 57 percent of their shots overall (28 for 49).
The Hawks continued their strong start under new coach Bobby Collins. UMES went just 6-24 last year but now is 7-8 and has won six of its last eight games.
Guard Micah Mason had 16 points for Duquesne, which fell to 4-7 with the loss. Guard Derrick Colter added 15 points.
The Hawks return to action on Tuesday at Tennessee-Martin. Duquesne also plays Tuesday, going to UT Pan American.
