New Mexico 69, George Mason 58

Junior forward Jordan Goodman scored 19 points, leading New Mexico to a 69-58 victory over George Mason in the second round of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off on Friday night at Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Senior guard Deshawn Delaney added 16 points and eight rebounds for New Mexico (3-1). Freshman center Shevon Thompson recorded his first career double-double, posting 21 points and 19 rebounds for George Mason (1-3).

George Mason took a 12-9 lead when junior guard Patrick Holloway made a 3-pointer with 12:28 remaining in the opening period, but New Mexico responded with a 13-0 run to go up 22-12 with 5:37 to go.

Freshman guard Sam Longwood started the run with a 3-pointer and Goodman ended it, scoring the last three baskets on two jumpers and a layup.

George Mason cut the deficit to single digits on baskets by sophomore forward Jalen Jenkins and Thompson in the final 2:02, but New Mexico led 30-20 at the break after Delaney scored with 25 seconds left.

The Lobos shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half while holding the Patriots to 26.9-percent shooting.

George Mason made its first three shots to start the second half, including a 3-point play by Jenkins that cut New Mexico’s lead to 32-27. The Lobos extended the lead to nine on a 3-pointer by Goodman with 14:30 to go and went up by 12 when Goodman struck again with 9:51 remaining.

The Patriots cut the deficit to single digits on a couple of occasions in the final minutes, but they couldn’t close the gap.
