Norfolk State pulled away in the second half to earn an 88-49 nonconference victory over an overmatched Virginia-Wise squad Monday in Norfolk, Va.

The Spartans (7-5) led 34-26 at halftime, then went on a 12-0 run to start the second thanks to four 3-pointers, three of which came from guard Jeffrey Short. That was far too much for the Division II Cavaliers to overcome, and the Spartans continued to pour it on.

A layup from forward RaShid Gaston with less than a minute to play gave the Spartans their largest lead of the day at 39 points, which was the game’s final margin.

Short’s 27 points led Norfolk State, with and Gaston contributed 20 points and 14 rebounds. The Spartans shot 53.8 percent from the field (35-for-65) and forced 17 turnovers.

The Cavaliers (1-7) were led by guard Oliver Thompson, who scored 17 points off the bench. Freshman guard Philip Owens II added 12 points. Virginia-Wise took 33 three-pointers out of its 58 total shots but made just 10 of them. Overall, the Cavaliers shot 32.8 percent.

The result was no surprise: Virginia-Wise saw its losing streak reach seven games, with each defeat coming by at least 15 points.
