Saint Joseph’s overcame early offensive difficulties to blow past Loyola (Md.) 68-42 at Hagan Arena in Philadelphia on Tuesday.
The Greyhounds dominated the opening 12 minutes and grabbed a 18-7 lead, but after that, it was all Saint Joseph’s.
After falling behind by 11 points, the Hawks outscored the Greyhounds 50-13 over the next 20 minutes. Saint Joseph’s (5-4) led by as many as 26 in a second half that was all Hawks.
Saint Joseph’s defense limited Loyola to 28.3 percent shooting (15-for-53) from the floor and 12.5 percent (2-for-16) on 3-pointers. The Hawks’ offense that struggled to score in the initial minutes would up shooting 46.9 percent (23-for-49).
The transition game played a big role in the Hawks’ comeback, as they outscored the Greyhounds 15-6 off turnovers and 14-2 on the fast break. Saint Joseph’s also held a 32-24 advantage on points in the paint.
The Hawks’ powerful transition attack was led by sophomore wing DeAndre Bembry, who scored 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Bembry also led the team with seven rebounds. Senior point guard Chris Wilson added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists, while junior forward Isaiah Miles had nine and four rebounds.
Forward Cam Gregory led Loyola (3-6) with 14 points and eight rebounds, hitting seven of nine shots from the field. Greyhounds freshman guard Andre Walker added 12 points.
