Junior guard Justin Anderson scored 11 points to lead No. 9 Virginia to a 67-39 victory over visiting Norfolk State on Sunday evening at John Paul Jones Arena.

Junior forward Mike Tobey had 10 points and seven rebounds for Virginia (2-0). Junior guard Jeffrey Short scored a game-high 19 points for Norfolk State (1-1), which shot just 23.5 percent from the field.

Norfolk State held a 6-5 lead after Short made a 3-pointer with 14:23 to play in the opening half, but Virginia responded with an 11-2 run to take a 16-8 lead on sophomore guard London Perrantes’ 3-pointer with 12:04 to go. The Cavaliers followed that burst with a 10-0 run to go up 26-10 on freshman guard Marial Shayok’s jumper with 7:20 remaining.

Short drained a 3-pointer and then sank three free throws after being fouled on another 3-point attempt moments later, but the Cavaliers continued to pull away. They outscored the Spartans 9-0 over a span of 2:06 to build a 37-16 lead with 3:42 to go in the half.

Virginia led 42-22 at the break after shooting 52 percent from the field while holding Norfolk State to 30.4-percent shooting. The Cavaliers shot a sizzling 72.7 percent from 3-point range, making 8 of 11 from beyond the arc.

Virginia continued to dominate, outscoring Norfolk State 10-3 to start the second half half. The Cavaliers led by as many as 33 points late in the game.
