(Don) Nelson, a pioneer of “smallball,’’ coached (Stephen) Curry just one season, and the tandem with Monta Ellis never worked.

“If you’re going to be small, you got to be a point guard and make plays for people,’’ Nelson said. “I tried to get Monta Ellis to do that, but he didn’t want to. He could’ve been a terrific point guard, but he didn’t think he could play with Steph and that was a kick in the teeth. Monta was single-minded when I had him.”
