Michigan State freshman guard Javon Bess is expected to miss one month with a fractured foot.

The Spartans lost backcourt starters Gary Harris and Keith Appling from last year’s team and Bess is in the mix to see playing time. Coach tom Izzo praised Bess for his versatility.

He averaged 22 points per game at Lincoln High School in Columbus, Ohio, as a senior last year.

Bess was scheduled to have surgery to repair the fifth metatarsal and the three-star freshman is likely out until December.

Michigan State opens the season Nov. 14 at Navy.
