Brandon Peel posted a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds, helping Central Connecticut State take charge in the second half and score a 65-53 victory over visiting Maryland-Baltimore County on Wednesday at the William H. Detrick Gymnasium in New Britain, Conn.

UMBC (0-9) battled Central Connecticut State (2-7), staying close into the second half. The game was tied at 28 at halftime before the Blue Devils slowly took over in the final 20 minutes.

Central Connecticut State used a 10-4 run to grab a 50-42 lead. Peel scored six of those 10 points, and the Retrievers never drew closer than five points again.

Guard Matt Mobley and forward Faronte Drakeford also scored 16 points for the Blue Devils. Central Connecticut State guard Khalen Cumberlander finished with 11 points.

Guard Wayne Sparrow led UMBC with 17 points. Forward Cody Joyce (13 points) and guard Will Darley (11 points) also scored in double figures.

The Retrievers couldn’t get much help from anywhere else, as that trio combined for 41 of the team’s 53 points.

UMBC plays host to Longwood on Sunday. The Blue Devils now have a 10-day break before returning to action Dec. 20, when they host NJIT, the school that recently knocked off Michigan.
