Minnesota Timberwolves vs Portland Trail Blazers Team News

Clutchpoint writer Diego Vergel De Dios thinks the Wolves would need to pull off a trade to become a legit playoff contender in the West. He mentions Larry Nance Jr., Thaddeus Young, and Jeremi Grant as potential trade targets for a team that lacks versatility in the frontcourt.

Adrian Bernecich of SB Nation blog Blazer’s Edge says he was impressed by interim GM Joe Cronin’s demeanor during the press conference. He believes Cronin’s reign will play out differently from the previous Neil Olshey era, no matter how short it would be. Olshey’s nine-year run as the Blazers GM ended after investigators found out that he indeed created a hostile culture in the Blazers front office.

“Cronin appeared on Thursday almost as the anti-Olshey: softly spoken where Olshey was brash and bombastic, collegiate were Olshey seemed vindictive, considered where Olshey was often volatile, and finally genuine, a word seldom used to describe the former television actor,” Bernecich opines.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs Portland Trail Blazers Injury Report

Timberwolves: D’Angelo Russell – Questionable (Ankle).

Trail Blazers: Damian Lillard – Questionable (Abdominal), Cody Zeller – OUT (Quad), CJ McCollum – OUT (Lung), Anfernee Simmons – Probable (Ankle), Nasir Little – Probable (Calf).

Minnesota Timberwolves vs Portland Trail Blazers Preview

Karl-Anthony Towns recorded 21 points and 7 boards, but his output wouldn’t translate to a Minnesota win as his team fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers, 106-123. Anthony Edwards only scored 13 points on a 6-for-17 shooting, while Malik Beasley added 15 off the bench. The loss dealt the Wolves their fifth straight loss since winning seven of the previous eight games.

Meanwhile, injuries continue to pile up for the Blazers, which recently lost CJ McCullum indefinitely with a collapsed lung. Without their two leading scorers, Portland just doesn’t possess sufficient offensive firepower to go toe-to-toe with elite teams. The lack of options in offense manifested in their recent loss to the Golden State Warriors, 104-94. Norman Powell scored a game-high 26 points in the match, and Nasir Little added 18. However, the Blazers couldn’t get more out of other players, which will remain the major problem for the team until Lillard returns to action.

Minnesota Timberwolves vs Portland Trail Blazers Prediction

Fearless Forecast: The Timberwolves will snap their losing skid and prolong the Blazers’ misery.

Portland sports a 7-3 head-to-head recover over the Timberwolves in the last 10 games and 2-1 in the last three. The Blazers also carries a solid 10-4 home record, while the Wolves hold a 4-6 road slate. However, Portland has been an entirely different team without Lillard and McCollum on the floor. The two have been the heart and soul of the Blazers over the last five to six years. Their absence certainly created a lot of dilemmas for head coach Chauncy Billups on how to generate their offense. On the other hand, the Wolves still have Towns and Edwards to rely on, even if Russell still can’t play in the match. The bottom-line: the healthier teams will win this match.

  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Portland’s last 7 games this season.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Portland’s last 10 games against Minnesota.
  • In 6 of Minnesota’s last 7 games against an opponent in the Northwest Division division, the total has gone UNDER.
