Norfolk State 73, Coppin State 68

Norfolk State won for the third time in its last four games with a 73-68 MEAC victory over Coppin State on Saturday afternoon at Coppin’s Physical Education Complex in Baltimore.

The Spartans improved to 15-11 overall and 9-3 in the MEAC. Coppin State fell for the fourth straight time, dropping to 9-18 and 6-8.

Senior center Brandon Goode and senior guards Pendarvis Williams and Malcolm Hawkins led Norfolk State in scoring 15 points each. Coppin State was paced by junior guard Taariq Cephas, who scored a game-high 19 points.

With 5:12 left in the game, Norfolk State held its largest lead at 62-45 on a Goode jumper. But Coppin State went on a furious tear, whittling the deficit to 73-68 on senior forward Michael Murray’s 3-pointer with nine seconds left.

Hawkins secured Norfolk State’s victory hitting both ends of a 1-and-1 with 8.3 seconds remaining.

Norfolk took a 35-27 lead into halftime. The Spartans shot almost 50 percent from the field, hitting 14 of 29, and Coppin was 10 of 24.

Coppin’s largest lead of the half was 13-9 and Norfolk State’s biggest advantage was 30-21. The Spartans outrebounded Coppin 13-8 but pounded the Eagles 8-1 on the offensive boards in the half.
