The Minnesota Timberwolves named Sidney Lowe as an assistant coach on Friday.
Lowe will work under head coach Flip Saunders for a fourth stint. Previously, Lowe served as an assistant under Saunders in Minnesota from 1999-2000 and 2003-05, and in Detroit with the Pistons from 2005-06.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are excited to add Sid Lowe to our coaching staff,” Saunders said in a statement. “I have great respect for Sid. He has a great basketball mind and an extensive coaching background as a head and assistant coach in both the NBA and collegiate levels, which will be extremely valuable on our staff. Sid relates well with players and will play an important role in the development of talent on our roster.”
Lowe’s ties with the Timberwolves began in 1990 as a player in the franchise’s inaugural season. He played a career-high 80 games and averaged 21.8 minutes per game. He retired after the season, remaining with the organization as the team’s television color analyst for 1990-91. He served as an assistant coach in 1991-92 under then-coach Jimmy Rodgers and was promoted to head coach midway through the 1992-93 season. He remained in that position through 1993-94.
After five seasons as an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers (1994-99) and one with the Timberwolves (1999-2000), Lowe served as head coach of the Vancouver Grizzlies from 2000-03. He was then head coach at North Carolina State (2006-11) before spending 2011-14 as an assistant with the Utah Jazz.
As a player, Lowe was a second round draft pick of the Chicago Bulls in 1983. He was traded to the Indiana Pacers, where he spent the 1983-84 season. In 1984-85, Lowe played with the Pistons and Atlanta Hawks. He spent the next three seasons in the Continental Basketball Association, winning a league title each year. He returned to the NBA with the Charlotte Hornets during the 1988-89 season and then the expansion Timberwolves in 1990.
