The George Washington Colonials had five players in double figures and came up with the big plays down the stretch to win in Richmond, Va., in a 73-65 win over the Spiders in a critical game for both team’s NCAA Tournament hopes.

Richmond (17-9, 7-4) saw its three-game winning streak end and fell out of a second-place tie in the Atlantic 10 Conference. George Washington (20-6, 8-4) ended a two-game losing streak and picked up some momentum as it prepares to face first-place St. Louis on Saturday.

Guard Maurice Creek scored 16 points off the bench to lead the Colonials. Guard Joe McDonald and forward Isaiah Armwood each had 14. Forward Kevin Larsen had 11 points and 13 rebounds, with guard Patricio Garino adding 10.

Guard ShawnDre’ Jones had a monster effort for Richmond off the bench, with 25 points on 10 of 14 shooting. Forward Terry Allen added 16, while guard Kendall Anthony finished with 14.

George Washington won the game at the free throw line, putting the Spiders away there late. The Colonials finished 22-31 from the stripe, while Richmond went 6-14.

The Spiders led 29-28 at the half.
